Clothing Names for Indian Women


The traditional clothing in India for women widely vary from one state to another. There are diverse languages, customs, religions, castes and faiths in India and the diversity reflects in the clothing too. Females from different regions of the country would prefer to wear their area specific outfit. Due to the better communication and interaction among Indian people, they have started adopting each other’s clothing. This also gives a lot of choices to pick the best dress on special occasions like parties, festivals, events or wedding ceremonies.

Indian women clothing names are vary from one place to another. In this post, I will explain you a few selected names of Indian dresses for women to get an overview about them.

Saree - A long piece of cloth tied around the waist and worn with a blouse and petticoat. Saree is found in a wide range in all states of India. Famous saree types include the following:

North Indian sarees include amru brocade, tanchoi, shikargarh brocade and tissues.

Fine silk thread is used to design tissue sarees.

Jamawar saree is famous in Uttar Pradesh, which is beautifully designed with zari thread embroidery.

Jamawar sarees have bright colors like green, orange and red.

Organza saree is also very famous in Uttar Pradesh. The saree is made of light and transparent fabric that make it look stunning. Its embroideries are mainly found in Kanpur and Lucknow.

Banarasi Brocade and Kota sarees are evergreen sarees. These sarees are mostly worn in North India.

Kota Jali saree or Kota Darai saree is popular in Rajasthan.

Mysore crepes saree, Pochampallis saree and Puttapakshi saree are from South India. Bavanjipets saree and Nayayanpets saree are mainly worn in wedding ceremonies in Kerala. These sarees have golden border design and beautiful cream base.

Konrad and Kacnheepuram sarees are also worn exclusively in South India.

Baluchari saree is famous in West Bengal, East India. The saree was also worn in the era of Ramayana and Mahabharata.

Taant saree is made of loom. The beautiful Bengali saree is made of Bengal cotton. Taant saree is known for its uniqe appearance and color combination.

Kantha saree has beautiful embroidery. Its decorative motifs with beautiful stitches are eye-catching. It has designer floral, bird and animal motifs.

Bomkai saree is also called as Sonepuri sari. It is a beautiful designed saree from Odisha. Bomkai saree is made of cotton yarn.

Sambalpuri saree is famous in Odisha. It is made of taussor, silk and cotton.

Bandhani saree is famous in Gujarat and Rajasthan, designed with tie and dye technique. Bandhani saree is also called as Bandhej saree.
